Atlanta International Airport cancels only 1.24 percent of its scheduled departures, a rate that places it among the most reliable hubs in the country. A new report by Consumer Affairs identifies Hartsfield-Jackson as the fifth-best airport for avoiding major flight disruptions.
The study examined federal flight data from 122 airports to determine where travelers are least likely to face long waits or cancelled trips. At ATL, approximately 20.21 percent of flights experience a moderate delay, defined as any wait between 15 minutes and three hours. Severe delays, lasting more than three hours, affect just 1.25 percent of departures from the airport.
Los Angeles International Airport, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, and Salt Lake City International Airport all outranked Atlanta in the reliability rankings. These four facilities posted lower rates of disruption across the measured metrics.
The report also listed the five airports with the highest rates of flight interruptions. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport, Miami International Airport, and Philadelphia International Airport all faced more frequent delays and cancellations than their counterparts.
Atlanta remains the busiest airport in the world by passenger volume. The new findings suggest that high traffic does not necessarily correlate with frequent service interruptions. The data provides a concrete measure of operational stability for the hub that serves the Atlanta metropolitan area.
