Bayern Munich put six goals past second-tier Magdeburg on Wednesday night, advancing in the German Cup while leaving its freshly crowned Ballon d'Or winner, Harry Kane, in a suit for the full 90 minutes. Kane, 33, received a guard of honour at the Allianz Arena and waved to the home crowd before kickoff. He had won the award two days earlier, on Monday, becoming the first English player to collect it since Michael Owen in 2001.

Kane's absence from the team sheet was a workload decision. Bayern has a stretch of domestic and European fixtures ahead, beginning Saturday with a Bundesliga match against Borussia Dortmund, then a trip to Spain next week to face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. Bayern and Dortmund enter Saturday level on points at the top of the table.

On the pitch, Michael Olise scored twice for Bayern, with Ismael Saibari's goal for Magdeburg between them. Magdeburg equalised in the first half and struck the post just before the break. Alphonso Davies and Nathaniel Brown scored within three minutes of each other after halftime, and 19-year-old David Santos Daiber added the sixth in stoppage time.

Assistant coach Aaron Danks ran the bench for a second straight match. Head coach Vincent Kompany collapsed during a training session last week, was hospitalised on Friday, and was discharged Wednesday. Board member for sport Max Eberl told broadcaster ARD before the match that Kompany's collapse came from a meningeal irritation, and said: "Given the circumstances, he's doing well. He was discharged from the hospital today. That is the biggest and best news for all of us."

Eberl said Kompany will rest and take medication, and that he expects him back on the touchline soon. No return date has been set, and Kompany resumes his duties only after medical clearance. Bayern leads the Bundesliga standings ahead of Saturday's Klassiker.
