Falons Concede Three Straight Openers Despite Fifth-Best Scoring
The Atlanta Falcons allowed opponents to score on every opening drive in their last three games, a pattern that has left the team conceding early points despite a strong first-quarter offense.

The Atlanta Falcons have allowed the opposing team to score on the opening drive of the game for the third consecutive week. In each of those contests, the Falcons won the coin toss and deferred possession. The opponents then marched down the field over roughly 10 plays and put points on the board. Two of those drives resulted in touchdowns, while the third concluded with a short field goal.
The defensive unit has given up an average of 23 points in the second quarter, the worst such average in the league. Head coach Arthur Smith noted that the team has been unable to execute fast starts, often falling behind after the initial exchange. The coaching staff wants to stop the bleeding on those early drives so the rest of the game is not defined by a deficit.
The Falcons enter Week 8 with a 4-3 record and a 5.4 point average in the first quarter, which ranks sixth in the NFL. That offensive production provides a cushion, but the team is seeking a more balanced approach. Coach Smith emphasized that the group needs to get off the field in under three minutes and score to establish momentum before the second quarter begins.
Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. earned the AFC Offensive Player of the Week honor last week after leading the team to a 52-31 victory over the Chicago Bears. Penix has shown marked improvement in his mechanics, including a faster release from his left hand and fewer tight-window passes. He has thrown only one interception in five starts, a mark that signals stability at the quarterback position.
Wide receiver Chris Godwin has been a consistent target for the Falcons over the last three games, catching 11 passes for 166 yards and one touchdown. His presence in the end zone helps offset the early defensive struggles. The receiving corps continues to generate separation, giving Penix reliable options when the defense forces him to move.
The injury list for the upcoming game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is long. Wide receiver Beaux Collins and offensive tackle Cameron Williams are listed as full participants. Defensive end Samson Ebukam, safety DeMarcco Hellams, defensive tackle LaCale London, right tackle Jawaan Taylor, cornerback Avieon Terrell, and wide receiver Olamide Zaccheaus are limited. Defensive back Billy Bowman Jr., linebacker Divine Deablo, defensive end Za' Darius Smith, and running back Brian Robinson did not participate in practice.
The Falcons face the Buccaneers on Sunday in Tampa. The team will look to break the pattern of slow starts and hold the ball early to control the tempo of the contest.
