Real Madrid defeated Barcelona 2-1 on Sunday night at Camp Nou, ending the Catalan club's nine-game winning streak in La Liga. The result gave the visitors their first victory over their archrivals this season and secured a narrow lead in the all-time head-to-head record.
Kylian Mbappe scored both goals for Real Madrid, bringing his total for the club to 100 across all competitions since his transfer from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024. The French forward now has 14 goals in the current campaign and finished second in the Golden Boot race in La Liga last season. He is also the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history.
The victory interrupted a strong run for Barcelona, who were on the verge of breaking Real Madrid's record for the best start to a Spanish top flight season, set in 1968-69. It also marked the second consecutive loss for Hansi Flick's team, following a defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League earlier this week.
Manager Jose Mourinho, 63, returned to the manager's chair at Real Madrid after two trophyless seasons for the club. His first major test in the role came against Barcelona, a matchup he has previously won 107 times in total across all competitions, one more than Barcelona's 106 wins.
Real Madrid's form has improved recently, with the team winning five consecutive matches in all competitions, including three in the league. This result moved them up to third place in the La Liga table with 24 points after ten games, placing them three points behind Barcelona and one point behind second-placed Atletico Madrid.
Mourinho credited the team's defensive resilience and attacking intent in the post-match comments. "If we win today but lose at El Sardinero, it counts for nothing, because Madrid isn't playing to win at the Camp Nou," he said. "They're playing to win the championship."
The win comes ahead of the Ballon d'Or ceremony scheduled for Monday in London. Mbappe is among the frontrunners for the award, having topped the scoring charts in both La Liga and the Champions League last season while also winning the Golden Boot at the 2026 World Cup.
Real Madrid will look to maintain their momentum as they continue their league campaign. The club has not won a major trophy in the last two seasons, a gap Mourinho aims to close during his first year back in Spain. The team's next fixture is not detailed in the immediate aftermath of the Clasico victory.
