Travel videos generated with artificial intelligence are promoting real hotels and vacation rentals with altered images and prices that do not match official listings, according to a review of TikTok posts published October 27, 2026. The posts carry TikTok labels stating the content was made with artificial intelligence and that the creator earns commission from qualifying purchases.

One video promoted a rental home in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Compared with the property listing, the video showed apparent differences in the home's exterior and in the layout and furnishings of the living room. The post advertised $93 per person per night without naming travel dates, occupancy, taxes or fees. When checked against the listing, the rate displayed was about $865 per night, and the advertised deal was not found on the booking link or the property's official booking sites.

Another AI-generated video promoted a beachfront rental in Panama City Beach. In the video, a kitchen appeared to connect directly to a bedroom; the actual listing showed that opening leads outside. A side-by-side comparison also showed differences in the neighboring house. A separate video presented features as part of the Gaylord National Resort at National Harbor outside Washington, D.C., but the footage appeared to combine features from more than one Gaylord resort, including an outdoor lazy river that is not located at Gaylord National.

Posts promoting other specials were also reviewed, including an offer of three nights for about $359 at Pine Mountain Callaway Resort And Gardens in Georgia. That offer could not be found through the listed booking link or the property's official website when checked in October 2026. Expedia said the accounts shared with it do not appear connected to Expedia's affiliate program and that the discounts featured in the videos are not an Expedia affiliate offering. Booking.com did not respond by deadline.

TikTok told investigators it requires AI-generated content labels on realistic scenes or people, and that misleading AI content would prohibit an account from earning a commission, provided the content is caught in the platform's general moderation or reported by a user. Federal Trade Commission truth-in-advertising standards apply to endorsements on social media, and paid relationships that could affect how viewers judge a recommendation may need to be disclosed. In Georgia, the Fair Business Practices Act declares unfair or deceptive practices in consumer transactions unlawful.

Atlanta-based travel agent Nicholas Santine of TravelMation advised travelers to verify properties independently before booking. "Google the location. Google the hotel.. See reviews. Look at review photos," Santine said. "Go to the exact website. Don't trust the link." He added that a real-life travel agent is the safest way to avoid losing money or arriving at a place that is not as advertised, and that most travel agents are licensed and primarily free to use, with commission paid by resorts and amenities.
