The 2026 Ballon d'Or ceremony is scheduled for tonight at the London Palladium, concluding a season that has produced a tight competition among three candidates. The award recognizes the best footballer of the 2025-26 season, and the final decision will be made within the next 24 hours.
Lamine Yamal, Kylian Mbappe, and Harry Kane form the core of the race. Yamal, a 19-year-old winger for Barcelona and Spain, has publicly supported his own candidacy. Mbappe, the French forward and 2018 World Cup winner, has also campaigned for the honor. Kane, the England captain, has taken a more subdued approach to promoting his case.
French data analysis firm Avisia released probability estimates based on artificial intelligence models. The firm places Yamal as the statistical favorite with a 23 percent chance of winning. Kane follows with a 21 percent probability, while Mbappe holds a 19 percent chance. Rodri, the 2024 winner, is tied with Mbappe at 19 percent. Lionel Messi rounds out the top five with an 18 percent likelihood of claiming a record-extending ninth title. Avisia noted that its model correctly identified the top five candidates for the 2025 award, which Ousmane Dembele received.
Commercial bookmakers present a different picture. They identify Kane as the outright favorite, assigning him approximately a 70 percent probability of victory. This divergence suggests that while algorithms weigh statistical output, market sentiment favors the English striker.
Players and managers have offered varied endorsements. Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone argued that Messi deserves the award, citing his performance at age 38 after recently retiring from international duty. Simeone stated, “After the World Cup, he played at his age… No doubt about it.” Former Italy international Marco Materazzi agreed, saying, “With all due respect to Yamal, I think Messi showed, at 38 years old, he’s in a different league.”
Jude Bellingham, who is also shortlisted, backed Kane. He described the England captain as an honest and hard-working person and said it is definitely possible for Kane to win. Anthony Gordon, an England international and Yamal's teammate at Barcelona, praised the younger player's level of play. Gordon called Yamal's achievements at such a young age ridiculous and said he is on a whole other level. Aurelien Tchouameni, Mbappe's teammate at Real Madrid, supported the Frenchman by describing his season as incredible.
Individual statistics show Mbappe leading in scoring metrics. He finished as La Liga's top scorer with 25 goals and was the leading marksman in the Champions League with 15 goals. Mbappe also won the World Cup Golden Boot and set the record for most World Cup goals with 12. Kane scored 73 goals last season, the highest total by any player since Messi netted 82 in 2011-12.
Team success remains a decisive factor in the selection process. Mbappe did not win a major trophy with his club or country during the year. Kane won the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich but guided England to a third-place finish. Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona. His personal statistics were affected by injury, but his team success aligns with historical trends. Only four of the previous 19 Ballon d'Or winners failed to lift a major continental or global title during their winning year.
If Yamal wins, he will become the youngest recipient of the award. He would surpass Brazilian Ronaldo, who was 21 when he won in 1997.
