The Spanish football federation fined Barcelona 602 euros ($670) for approaching Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez. This penalty concludes a formal complaint filed by the league rivals over the manner in which the clubs communicated.
Atletico argued that Barcelona contacted the Argentine player without first providing written notice as required by the federation's rules. The fine was issued under Article 133 of the regulatory code. Atletico also brought the issue before FIFA, but the international governing body stated it lacked jurisdiction to intervene in the matter.
The financial penalty for Barcelona is relatively small compared to the public scrutiny Alvarez has faced. His contract with Atletico Madrid runs until June 2030. During the 2026 World Cup, Alvarez told interviewers he wanted to fulfill his dream of playing for Barcelona. That comment triggered a transfer dispute that persisted through the summer window.
Atletico supporters have frequently booed Alvarez during the current season. Following his winning goal against Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday, however, sections of the crowd at the Metropolitano stood to applaud him. This reaction suggests the tension between the player and the local fanbase may be easing.
Alvarez apologized for his earlier remarks about joining the Catalan club. "It was a mistake. I understand why the fans are angry. If I were a fan, I'd be angry, too. Especially given how they've supported me since I arrived," he said. He has scored 51 goals in 115 appearances for Atletico since joining from Manchester City in 2024.
With his second goal in as many matches, Atletico moved to within two points of league leaders Barcelona in the standings.
