For the first time in their history, Brighton & Hove Albion defeated Manchester City on the road. The 1-0 victory on Saturday moved the Seagulls within two points of the Premier League leaders, shifting the momentum in the title race.

Brighton secured their 18th attempt at an away win against City. The result snapped City’s seven-game winning streak that had started the season under manager Enzo Maresca. It also marked the second consecutive league loss for the 10-time champions.

Yasin Ayari put Brighton ahead in the 11th minute. Bart Verbruggen made key saves in the second half to preserve the lead during a sustained City attack. Jack Hinshelwood hit the side netting late in the match, missing a chance to extend the margin.

Manager Fabian Hurzeler viewed the win as redemption. His team had lost to City on penalties in the League Cup on Wednesday. Hurzeler’s side had led twice during that match at the Etihad before conceding late.

The win follows a convincing victory over reigning champions Arsenal earlier in the season. Brighton has never won a major trophy but now holds a realistic claim to the title. City, meanwhile, faces a potential crisis off the pitch.

The club has appealed a guilty verdict on more than 100 charges related to Premier League financial rules. If the appeal fails, City could face a severe points deduction or even relegation. Arsenal can move to the top of the table if they avoid defeat at Liverpool on Sunday.
