Two Boston Police Department officers were hospitalized after a shooting incident in the Brighton neighborhood on Friday morning. The encounter ended with the death of a man who was armed with a knife.
Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox stated that units responded to a residence on Selkirk Road at approximately 7:00 a.m. The initial report indicated a man holding a knife threatened to harm himself. Before officers arrived on the scene, dispatchers informed them that the individual might be experiencing a mental health crisis.
Cox explained that officers engaged with the man for roughly 20 minutes in an attempt to calm the situation. The man then lunged at the officers, threatening to strike them. As he pursued one officer, police fired a shot that struck his abdomen. Cox noted that officers fired to neutralize the immediate threat.
Emergency personnel transported the man to a local hospital where he was listed in critical condition. Police later confirmed he died from his injuries. The two officers involved in the incident were also taken to a local hospital for medical evaluation.
Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said his office will lead the investigation into the shooting. He stated that the district attorney’s office directs inquiries whenever a police officer uses a firearm. Hayden added, “These situations are always changing; never easy.”
Police tape cordoned off the entrance to the residence while investigators worked the scene. The incident occurred in the Brighton district of Boston.
