No team in the NFC South holds a winning record as the league enters Week 8. The Carolina Panthers sit atop the division standings at 3-3. They are the only club in the group with three wins.
The Panthers lost by 30 points on Sunday. The score was 43-13 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That defeat extended their struggles on the road. They have not won an away game this season.
The Atlanta Falcons moved to 3-4 with a 22-20 victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night. The win snapped a two-game losing streak. The Falcons had been 2-4 entering Week 7.
Falcons safety Jessie Bates III said the division is in the air. He noted that no team has won more than three games. He described the situation as a lot of different things, but the same result.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are 2-5. They started the season with four straight losses. They are now one and a half games behind the division leaders. Their defense allowed 31 points in the loss to Carolina.
The New Orleans Saints also stand at 2-5. They lost 61-10 to the Detroit Lions on Sunday. That loss marked the fourth defeat in their last five games. They have lost three of their last four games on the road.
The standings reflect a season of upsets and inconsistent play. The Falcons upset the previously unbeaten 49ers. The Buccaneers, who began 0-4, are within striking distance. The Panthers lead despite losing by a double digit margin.
The Falcons face the New Orleans Saints at 1 p.m. ET Sunday at State Farm Stadium. The Buccaneers play the Atlanta Falcons at 4:05 p.m. ET Sunday at Raymond James Stadium. The Panthers host the New Orleans Saints at 1 p.m. ET Sunday at Bank of America Stadium. The Saints play at home against the Panthers.
The division race remains tight with two weeks remaining before the midseason break. Every game has carried weight this season. The Panthers, Falcons, Buccaneers, and Saints all have similar point differentials. No team has established a clear dominance.
The next round of games will determine which team can pull ahead. The Falcons need a win to return to .500. The Buccaneers need a win to close the gap. The Panthers need to stop the bleeding on the road. The Saints need to find a way to win on the road.
