Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens is asking educators and employers to give workers and students time to watch the Atlanta Dream play in the WNBA Finals on Thursday.

The game was originally set for 8 p.m. at State Farm Arena. Officials moved the start time to 12:30 p.m. to fit the Atlanta Hawks’ game against the Cleveland Cavaliers later that night.

Thursday marks Game 6 of the best-of-seven series. The Dream trail the Golden State Valkyries 3-2, so the contest will determine whether the series continues to Game 7 or ends with a loss for the Dream.

In an open letter, Dickens urged local leaders to extend grace to those following the game. He noted that fans may attend in person or watch on their devices. “Whether they’re at the game or catching a few moments on their devices, please allow them to be excited to cheer on our home team,” he wrote. Dickens also told leaders to lean into the historic moment and let Atlanta show up for the team.

Dream ownership responded with their own letter. They said the new start time is not what they fought for. The team had previously raised concerns that the finals schedule conflicted with NBA games at State Farm Arena. “Our concerns did not receive the attention, nor the urgency that they deserved,” the letter said.

The Dream completed its final season at Gateway Center Arena, which seats 3,500 fans. State Farm Arena, with a capacity of 17,000, is set to be the team’s home next season.
