The Milwaukee Brewers won the World Series on Wednesday night after defeating the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in Game 5. The final score ended Tampa Bay's championship hopes and capped a series that featured a dramatic 12-inning victory for the Rays in Game 4.

Robert Shedden, a St. Pete native who has followed the team since 2008, watched the final out from the stands. He noted that the experience mirrored his feelings after the 2008 and 2020 seasons, where the team also fell short of a title. "Always the bridesmaid, never the bride," he said.

Shedden described the Brewers as a team that was "a buzz saw" throughout the series. He argued that Milwaukee was simply better in every capacity and that the Rays were always two steps behind. He pointed to Game 3 as the moment the series turned, specifically citing the eight-run fifth inning. "That really took our soul," he said.

While fans often look for a single culprit, Shedden rejected the idea that one person is to blame. He acknowledged that observers might criticize manager Kevin Cash for pulling pitcher Drew Rasmussen too early or for defensive choices. "It was all around the board," he said.

Shedden stayed through the entire Game 5, holding onto hope until the final swing. He expressed a desire for the Rays to retain their current roster and improve their bullpen. He also suggested the team needs to spend more money to remain competitive, though he noted the upcoming move to a new home in Tampa may limit immediate spending.

The season ended with the Rays avoiding a sweep but still falling one win short of the trophy. Shedden remains optimistic about the team's future, believing they will be competitive again even if they do not return to the World Series next year. "It's the life of a Rays fan," he said. "You always have hope and always just a little bit short."
