Voters across Cobb County have begun casting ballots for the midterm elections, a process that political experts say hinges on three specific demographic groups. Analysts are monitoring these voters to predict which party will control Congress.

Lincoln Mitchell, a professor at Columbia University, identified rural voters as the first group facing pressure. He cited agricultural tariffs and rising costs for home heating and diesel fuel as factors squeezing household budgets. Mitchell said financial strain could lower turnout or reduce enthusiasm for President Donald Trump and Republicans, though he did not expect a major party shift.

The second group is Latino voters. Mitchell noted that this demographic is not monolithic but will be decisive in battleground states. Texas, which faces one of the most competitive Senate races, is a key example. Republicans made gains among Hispanic voters in Texas, Arizona, and Florida recently, but Mitchell questioned if those inroads will last.

The third group consists of young white men, who turned out heavily for Trump in 2024. Mitchell pointed to foreign policy and affordability as drivers for potential change. He warned that if a fraction of these voters stay home or switch parties, the impact on Republican candidates could be severe.

Midterm elections historically disadvantage the party holding the White House. President Trump has asked supporters to vote as if his name were on the ballot to break that trend. Tuesday night will show if that strategy worked or if Democrats gain control.
