A 2019 Toyota Corolla worth $20,000 sits at the center of a felony arrest involving Lakesha Womack, a candidate for North Carolina’s 14th Congressional District. The vehicle was rented from Budget Car Rental in October 2019 and was not returned by the agreed-upon date, leading to a charge of failure to return a hired motor vehicle valued at more than $4,000.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, deputies served Womack with the felony warrant on Oct. 11 at a campaign event. The criminal summons was originally issued in January 2020 but was not served until this month. It was not immediately clear why the warrant was not served earlier. Womack is 49 years old and is currently running in a district that includes Gastonia, Shelby, Morgantown, and parts of far south Charlotte.
Womack is challenging Republican incumbent Rep. Tim Moore in the midterm general election scheduled for Nov. 3. Her campaign did not directly address the felony warrant when asked about the situation. Instead, the team focused on attack ads from Moore’s campaign, Friends of Tim Moore. A statement from the campaign noted that allegations involving Womack have drawn media attention over the past few weeks.
“Candidates for public office should be held accountable and voters deserve transparency,” the statement read. It continued, “Throughout this campaign, I have emphasized accountability and affordability. I believe every candidate and elected official should be evaluated by consistent standards, including their record of public service, their decisions in office, and their responsiveness to the people they represent.”
