Rep. Joe Morelle, D-N.Y., outlined the House Democratic strategy for protecting the upcoming midterm elections during a virtual briefing on Friday. As the Ranking Member of the Committee on House Administration, Morelle said Leader Jeffries charged him with leading the caucus-wide effort to secure the vote. The committee holds jurisdiction over federal election law. Morelle stated the goal is to prevent President Donald Trump from subverting the election through various tactics.

The party has assembled a team of lawmakers, litigators, activists, and organizers working across the country. Morelle emphasized that every eligible American must have the chance to cast a meaningful ballot. He added that voting must remain free from threats, intimidation, and violence. The group aims to ensure that all ballots cast by voters are counted fairly and accurately.

A major component of this effort involves 300 House staff members volunteering to serve as observers. Morelle said these staff will be deployed to 60 to 70 different locations where election results are expected to be very close. Their role is to take firsthand, contemporaneous notes on the tabulation process. This provides the party with on-the-ground evidence should any challenges arise after the votes are counted.

These preparations come amid President Trump’s recent actions regarding the midterms. The president has made numerous claims about rampant voter fraud without substantiation. Last Monday, he offered a $1 million award for reporting voter fraud in a post on Truth Social. The Trump administration has also suggested that tens of thousands of ineligible voters, including immigrants, are casting ballots. In contrast, the Justice Department has charged only a few dozen people with election-related crimes this year.

In the days before Election Day, the administration attempted to intervene in elections in Alaska and California. Both efforts were blocked by the eve of the vote. In Alaska, officials sought to block the certification of U.S. Senate race results to investigate whether voters were confused by two candidates with similar names. A federal judge threw out the lawsuit on Sunday. In California, an attempt to force the state to set aside 20,000 ballots based on claims of noncitizen voting was rejected by the Supreme Court on Monday.
