Pittsburgh running back Damon Ferguson carried the ball for a season-high 185 yards and a touchdown to lead his team to a 34-11 victory over Georgia Tech on Saturday night. The win ended a three-game losing streak for the Panthers, who improved to a 6-3 record and secured bowl eligibility.
The Panthers' offense dominated the statistical categories, outgaining the Yellow Jackets 461 yards to 238. Pittsburgh's defensive line applied consistent pressure, recording five sacks that prevented Georgia Tech quarterbacks Alberto Mendoza and Grady Adamson from establishing a rhythm. The defense also forced three turnovers, including a fumble recovery by the Panthers.
Mendoza struggled during the first three quarters, completing only 16 of 25 passes for 81 yards. He also fumbled the ball three times before being replaced by Adamson in the fourth quarter. Adamson utilized his running ability to gain 63 yards and score a touchdown, but the effort was insufficient to overcome the deficit.
Pittsburgh quarterback Holden Gernier threw for 180 yards and a touchdown. The Panthers' passing game was hampered by several mistakes, including a fumble by tight end Carson Kent in the end zone during the second quarter. Wide receiver Malik Knight and other players dropped multiple passes. An early touchdown run by Ferguson was also nullified by a penalty, allowing Georgia Tech to remain competitive for a longer period than expected.
Gernier’s 30-yard pass to Blue Hicks in the early fourth quarter extended the lead to 24 points. This play effectively decided the outcome of the game. The Panthers have now won for the first time since losing starting quarterback Mason Heintschel to a knee injury in their October victory over Virginia Tech.
The result marks the sixth loss for Georgia Tech in its last seven meetings with Pittsburgh. The Yellow Jackets, currently 2-6, face a difficult final stretch of the schedule. They are projected to be underdogs in their remaining four games. The team, which finished 9-4 last season, will host Louisville next Saturday.
Pittsburgh finished the game with 10 penalties totaling 95 yards and three turnovers. The Panthers will need to improve their discipline to sustain their recent momentum. The loss drops Georgia Tech to a record that threatens its best season since 1994.
