The war between Russia and Ukraine has paused in the southern Kherson region for the first time in a meaningful way since the invasion began in early 2022. A humanitarian convoy is currently operating in the city of Oleshky, a location that has remained under Russian control but has seen limited cross-border movement prior to this week.

The timeline for this specific window of calm began late Thursday, October 29, when officials confirmed the completion of demining operations on designated routes into the city. Two workers were killed during that process. The localized ceasefire has now held for four days and is scheduled to remain in effect until Sunday evening.

A logistics hub was established in Armiansk, a town approximately 85 kilometers south of Oleshky. From there, a convoy consisting of 25 buses, ambulances, and aid vehicles entered the city on Friday. The operation is a joint effort involving Russian and Ukrainian officials. The United States played a central role in brokering the terms, with the White House crediting first lady Melania Trump for the negotiation. Pope Leo XIV also publicly urged both leaders to facilitate the mission.

The immediate goal is to distribute food and medicine to the approximately 2,000 people still living in Oleshky. Simultaneously, the operation allows residents to evacuate. Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine’s ombudsman and chief negotiator, stated that the evacuation process would run until 2 p.m. local time. Aid distribution was set to begin 30 minutes after that deadline. The specific route for evacuees has not been made public, though Ukrainian territory lies just across the River Dnipro, a distance of a few kilometers.

Volunteer Ksenia Arkhipova reported that roughly 1,000 residents have expressed a desire to leave the city. She noted that the presence of the Ukrainian delegation is a key factor for many, as some residents fear interrogation or detention by Russian authorities if they do not see a neutral observer. Both warring nations issued identical statements confirming that anyone wishing to leave could do so safely and that those choosing to stay would receive necessary support.

The truce is strictly limited to the Oleshky area. Fighting elsewhere in the region continued unabated. Russia’s Defense Ministry reported that air defense systems downed more than 1,000 Ukrainian drones overnight. Conversely, Ukraine’s air force said Russia launched ballistic missiles and scores of other drones during the same period. The contrast between the quiet in Oleshky and the intensity of the surrounding battlefield underscores the narrow scope of the current agreement.

A small number of media organizations from Russia, Ukraine, and the United States have been invited to cover the operation. The convoy is currently moving through the city, with the next scheduled milestone being the start of aid distribution following the 2 p.m. evacuation cutoff.
