Jefferson High School football players secured the Class 5A region championship on Saturday with a 27-17 victory over North Oconee. The win marked the fifth straight region title for the Dragons under head coach Travis Noland. The result ended a 40-game region winning streak for the North Oconee Titans.
Before this final matchup, the two programs had won a combined 57 of their last 58 region games. Noland described the preparation as an effort to perform at the highest level possible against a familiar rival. He noted that his team had been in this competitive position before and played well enough to claim the win.
The Dragons enter the playoff season ranked No. 6 in Class 5A. Jefferson will receive a bye before the postseason begins next week. This first-round rest allows the team time to rest and prepare for the upcoming bracket.
Noland discussed the logistical challenges of the playoff format with the PSR region. He explained that the system requires teams to travel to different locations for each round. The coaching staff is managing the schedule to ensure players are ready for the physical demands of the tournament.
The coach emphasized that the region is competitive and the path to a state championship remains difficult. North Oconee and other teams in the PSR region present strong challenges. Noland stated that the team must continue to improve and adapt as the tournament progresses.
Jefferson will resume full practice immediately to prepare for their first playoff opponent. The coaching staff is focusing on maintaining the defensive intensity that led to the region title win. The next scheduled game will determine the team's path toward the state tournament.
