Georgia Department of Transportation contractors will implement lane closures on I-285 and I-20 starting Monday, November 2, and continuing through Monday, November 9.
The work is part of the estimated $1.2 billion I-285/I-20 West Interchange project. The project will reconstruct and widen several interstate system-to-system ramps. It will also add collector-distributor lanes, connecting lanes, and auxiliary lanes along I-20 west and I-285 north of the interchange. The primary impacts are on the western portion of Atlanta, as well as Mableton, Smyrna, and the Vinings/Cumberland area in Cobb County.
A six-month closure of the westbound I-20 to I-285 southbound access to Martin Luther King Jr. Drive SW (SR 139) is scheduled to begin in January 2027. During this upcoming week, listed detours will be scheduled so they do not conflict with one another. Closures and detours will be coordinated to ensure proper maintenance of traffic. No more than one ramp in the I-285/I-20 West Interchange will be closed at a time.
Georgia DOT advises that exact times may change due to weather conditions. Intermittent traffic pacing and additional lane or ramp closures may occur within the work zone. Motorists are advised to expect delays, exercise caution, and reduce their speed while traveling through work zones. Drivers should stay alert and watch for workers.
Before heading out, commuters can get real-time information on work status and traffic conditions by calling 511, visiting 511ga.org, or downloading the Georgia 511 app. More information about the adjacent I-285 Westside Rebuild projects is available on the project website.
