Heritage of Conyers defeated Dunwoody 27-7 on Friday night at North DeKalb Stadium to secure the Region 4-6A championship. The victory marks the first region title for the Patriots since 2015 and concludes a season defined by a dramatic shift in fortunes for the program.
The win places Heritage among a small group of programs in the Georgia High School Association history. The team becomes the 16th to capture a region championship in the season immediately following a 1-9 or 0-10 record. In the previous campaign, the Patriots finished with just one win and nine losses.
Head coach Quincy Carter guided the team to this turnaround in his first year as a head coach. Carter previously played college football in the South and earned a degree from Georgia State University. His coaching journey began in 1995 when he started teaching and coaching at North DeKalb High School in Conyers.
Carter faced personal challenges before returning to the sideline. He struggled with substance abuse and addiction after his playing days, which he described as a period of squandering the ingredients necessary for stardom. He noted that he had to learn to live with himself and get good again before he could effectively direct the team's reversal.
The Patriots' path to the title was not without setbacks. Earlier in the season, Heritage lost to Dunwoody, 28-7. That game ended a winning streak for the Patriots and highlighted the unpredictability of the region. The teams met again for the championship, with Heritage entering the contest with a 7-2 record.
On Friday, the Patriots executed their game plan effectively. They stopped Dunwoody's drive when the team had the ball, forcing a punt. Heritage capitalized on the opportunity, scoring a touchdown to extend their lead. The final score remained 27-7 as the clock expired.
Coach Carter credited his staff and players for the effort. He stated that the team was in a tough spot at one point but worked to turn things around. He emphasized that the group believed in each other and stayed focused on the task at hand. The victory secured a region title for Heritage after years of trying.
The championship game took place at North DeKalb Stadium, the same venue where Carter began his coaching career. The atmosphere reflected the significance of the moment for the school and community. Heritage players celebrated on the field after the final whistle, marking a new era for the program.
