The Atlanta Dream enter Saturday with a chance to win the WNBA championship for the first time. The team secured its spot in the final game with an 80-69 victory over the Golden State Valkyries at State Farm Arena. The win caps a series that has seen the Dream lead the best-of-seven contest 3-2.

Coach Karl Smesko stated that the team has one more game and expects to play well. The Dream took control early in Thursday night's match, limiting the Valkyries to 69 points. Golden State attempted a late rally but could not overcome the early deficit. The game was played in front of a large crowd at the arena.

This will be the first Game 7 in WNBA history. The league adopted the best-of-seven format for the finals only last year. That series ended in a sweep, so no team has previously faced a deciding seventh game in the championship round. The Dream have no historical precedent to draw from in this specific context.

The team has reached the finals three times in the past, in 2010, 2011, and 2013. All three appearances occurred during shorter series formats. The Dream were swept in each of those instances. They have never advanced past a shorter final series to win the title.

Other Atlanta professional teams have mixed records in decisive games. The Braves are 4-7 in one-game playoff situations since moving to the city. This record includes the 2026 Wild Card Series against the Phillies. The team lost Game 7 of the 1991 World Series to the Twins. They have won three other Game 7s in the National League Championship Series.

The Hawks have never reached the NBA Finals as the Atlanta franchise. They are 10-5 in decisive Game 5s and Game 7s in other playoff rounds. The team lost Game 7 in the 1988 Eastern Conference semifinals. They won that round in 2021 against the Philadelphia 76ers. The franchise is 9-2 in series-deciding first-round games.

Atlanta United is 1-1 in decisive games of first-round playoff series. The team adopted the best-of-three format in 2023. The Atlanta Falcons do not play series-based playoffs. The former Atlanta Thrashers were swept in their single playoff appearance.

The Falcons are currently tied for first place in the NFC South with a 3-4 record. The Carolina Panthers share this standing after a loss on Thursday Night Football. The Panthers subsequently fired their defensive coordinator. The Falcons will play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

The Braves exercised club options for second baseman Ozzie Albies and outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. for the 2027 season. Albies will earn $7 million, and Acuna Jr. will earn $17 million. The team has days remaining to negotiate with free agents Mauricio Dubon, Raisel Iglesias, and Tyler Mahle.

Game 7 of the WNBA Finals will tip off at 8 p.m. Saturday. The game will be broadcast on USA Network. The winner of this contest will be named the 2026 WNBA champion.
