Waterbury officials ordered the closure of a 12-inch water main on North Main Street following a rupture in the 1100 block. The break is expected to remain under repair for approximately six to eight hours, with crews scheduled to begin work Friday.
The outage will affect roughly 25 homes and businesses in the immediate vicinity. Jonathan E. Reed Elementary School will dismiss students at noon. The Central Office of the public school district will send notifications to parents and guardians through ParentSquare regarding the early release.
A spokesperson for Mayor Paul K. Pernerewski Jr. stated that taps in the affected zone will be shut off temporarily around noon. Residents and business owners may experience reduced water pressure while Water Department workers assess the damage and prepare for the repair.
Once service is restored, officials warned that the water may initially appear discolored. The news release advised affected parties to run bathroom or kitchen faucets until the water runs clear.
Crews will also install an isolation valve near the break site. The Mayor's Office described this as a proactive measure to improve the water distribution system. The valve will allow the city to isolate the school's water service, preventing future disruptions to the campus if another break occurs nearby.
