Three Taverns Brewery will close its flagship taproom in East Decatur after 13 years of continuous operation.
Founder Brian ‘Beeps’ Purcell announced the decision on Nov. 2, confirming that the New Street location, situated at East Decatur Station, will suspend production. The company has not yet disclosed a specific final date for the closure. Purcell stated that the facility is no longer financially feasible to operate without external assistance. He described the decision as a difficult one, noting that the site served as the origin point for the company’s market beers.
Purcell, who has resided in Decatur for 20 years, explained that the closure is a strategic move to ensure the company's long-term survival. He wrote that the decision was made with a heavy heart but was necessary for the business to continue for many years. The New Street location was responsible for brewing the beers distributed to the wider market. Purcell indicated that an angel investor was not secured, leading to the suspension of operations at that specific site.
The brewery will continue to serve customers through two remaining locations. The Imaginarium taproom in Reynoldstown and the Ponce Brew Terminal on the Beltline will stay open. Purcell assured patrons that the same staff who have worked behind the bars will remain in place. These locations will continue to brew and distill products for on-site consumption. The company stated it is also working with a brewing partner to keep its core beers available on shelves and taps at bars, restaurants, and stores across the area.
Three Taverns has established a strong presence in the local community over the past decade. The company has received numerous awards for its craft. It has incorporated local identity into its branding, including the “A Night on Ponce” line of brews. The closure of the New Street facility marks the end of an era for the brewery's primary production hub. The company emphasized that while the flagship closes, the brand and its core team remain intact through its other operational sites.
