Athens, Georgia, will host the Ole Miss Rebels this weekend for a game that features a familiar face on the opposing sideline. Joenel Aguero, who spent the previous three seasons as a safety for the University of Georgia, transferred to Ole Miss during the offseason. Georgia will face him again after he emerged as a starter for the Bulldogs last season.

Aguero recorded 39 tackles and one interception in 12 games during his final year at Georgia. He battled injuries toward the end of that season, which cost him playing time. He finished his final game against Ole Miss before completing his transfer process to the Rebels.

Khalil Barnes has taken over the starting safety role for Georgia this season. He is a transfer from the University of South Carolina, where he played for one year. Barnes was a two-time All-SEC selection at South Carolina and earned a place on the team's roster after a strong performance in the transfer portal.

The Bulldogs view Barnes as an upgrade in terms of experience against conference opponents. He has faced several SEC teams before and brings a familiarity with the league's defensive schemes. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart noted that Barnes has been a valuable addition to the defense since arriving in Athens.

"I think he has a lot of experience against these teams and he has been a great player for us," Smart said. "He is a physical guy and he is a hitter. I am very excited to see him play against his old team."

Barnes was a standout at South Carolina, where he played in the 2022 and 2023 seasons. He was a two-time All-SEC selection and was named to the Academic All-SEC team. His experience in the league allows him to adjust quickly to the pace of play at Georgia.

The Bulldogs have relied on Barnes to fill the void left by Aguero. He has been a key contributor in the secondary, helping to improve the team's defensive metrics. Georgia coaches have praised his ability to read the game and make plays in the backfield.

Aguero will face his former teammates in Athens, a matchup that is not uncommon in college football. Many players move between programs, and the transfer portal has become a central part of team building. Both sides will look to use their knowledge of each other to gain an advantage in the game.

The game is part of Georgia's regular season schedule, and both teams are aiming to strengthen their position in the SEC standings. The Bulldogs will look to maintain their defensive rhythm, while Ole Miss will test the new safety alignment. This matchup offers a direct comparison of two different approaches to the safety position.
