Georgia defeated Florida 27-8 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 1, in the first time the rivalry game has been staged in Atlanta. The Bulldogs and Gators previously met annually in Jacksonville, Florida. The matchup will not return to Jacksonville until 2028 while the Jacksonville Jaguars renovate their stadium. Next year's game is scheduled for Tampa.
Downtown Atlanta drew fans wearing Bulldog red and Gator blue on Saturday afternoon.
Elijah Barnes, a Buford resident, said he attended the game for its convenience. "It's local, it's convenient, it's a good time," Barnes said. He described the gathering as a friendly rivalry and noted that a number of Florida alumni were present. Barnes said Atlanta has handled large events before. "You saw at the World Cup the amount of our police officers, our first responders, the entire city came together to make that happen, so this is a layup for the city," Barnes said. "Atlanta, Mercedes-Benz, I think as far as the United States goes, is probably the best place to host a sporting event."
Cindy Spritzer of Lake Oconee rode into the city by bus with friends for the game. "It's a great city, and for us to actually have it here, it's really exciting, and I'm glad that it didn't go between the Swamp and Sanford Stadium," Spritzer said. "It really makes sense for it to be here, and it's great for the city."
The game's next edition is set for Tampa in 2027.
