The Atlanta Braves will search the free agent market for a starting pitcher this winter.

The team finished the 2026 regular season with 94 wins, outpitching expectations despite a lack of major rotation additions in the previous offseason. However, the club faces uncertainty due to youth and injuries on the current roster. The organization believes a legitimate rotation addition is necessary to stabilize the pitching staff for the coming campaign.

Free agency opened recently, providing several options for the Braves to consider. Among the top available pitchers is Tarik Skubal, a 30-year-old left-hander currently with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Braves explored acquiring Skubal at the trade deadline but did not complete a deal. He is projected to sign a contract exceeding $300 million. His most frequent suitors include the Dodgers, Mets, Cubs, Padres, and Phillies, all of whom compete in the National League.

The market also features Clay Holmes, a right-hander for the New York Mets. The 33-year-old pitcher is seeking a two-year deal. He has been a reliable rotation option for the Mets, though his recent performance has shown some inconsistency. The Braves could compete with his current club if they are willing to match or exceed his asking price.

Another available option is Nick Martinez, a 36-year-old right-hander currently with the Miami Marlins. Martinez is looking for a one-year contract to provide depth to a rotation. He has shown flashes of his former All-Star form, though he has not sustained that level of play. His age and injury history make him a riskier investment for a team looking for long-term stability.

Casey Mize, a 29-year-old right-hander with the San Diego Padres, is also in the free agent pool. The Braves acquired Mize in a previous transaction, and his contract is nearing expiration. He has shown promise as a rotation starter but has struggled with consistency in recent seasons. His presence on the market could offer the Braves a familiar face if they choose to re-sign him.

Alex Wood, a 29-year-old right-hander for the Dodgers, is another potential target. Wood has been a reliable arm for the Dodgers, providing depth in their rotation. His contract status makes him an attractive free agent option for teams seeking experienced starters. The Braves would need to evaluate his fit within their existing rotation depth.

The Braves will evaluate these and other options as they build their roster for the next season. The organization aims to address its pitching needs before the start of the next campaign. Each prospect offers different advantages and risks, and the front office will weigh these factors in its decision-making process.
