Atlanta authorities closed sections of Juniper, 11th and 12th streets on Friday as traffic surged for the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting, Halloween celebrations, and a college football game.

The closures affect Juniper Street between 11th and 13th Streets, 11th Street from Peachtree to Juniper, and 12th Street from Peachtree to Juniper. Police and U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers deployed a large security presence across the Midtown district to manage the crowds and vehicle flow.

Residents navigating the area reported heavy congestion on the remaining open roads. Some drivers detoured to surrounding corridors, while others chose to walk around the closed zones. Transportation officials have not yet provided specific delay estimates for the detour routes.

Midtown resident Chris Lydle expressed enthusiasm for the international presence in his neighborhood. "It's awesome, it's exciting to have an international event in the neighborhood," he said. Fellow resident Richard Greenwood noted the city's growing global profile, stating, "G20 is an incredibly important body. It's not only an honor being held in Atlanta, it's prescient with FIFA and other things."

Other locals described the traffic as a regular occurrence for the area. One resident pointed out that major gatherings are frequent in Midtown, mentioning the Shaky Knees Festival, Pride Festival, and Midtown Arts Festival as comparable events. "It's always something," the resident said, adding that residents have become accustomed to the disruptions.

City officials expect to remove all barricades and reopen the affected streets to vehicle traffic on Sunday afternoon. The shutdowns will remain in place throughout the weekend to accommodate event security and pedestrian movement. Authorities have not specified whether public transit bus lines operating through Midtown will face route modifications before the roads reopen.
