Stroke survivors in Fargo now have a fixed monthly gathering to discuss recovery and connect with peers. Essentia Health holds these meetings on the last Thursday of every month from 3 to 4 p.m. The sessions include guest speakers, rehabilitation demonstrations, and social activities such as bingo.
Lori Aakre attended the event on World Stroke Day after suffering a stroke more than three years ago. She joined the support group approximately six months into her recovery. Aakre recalled that her symptoms began with visual disturbances, including black and gray streaks in one eye. When she and her husband sought walk-in care, medical staff identified the condition immediately.
Aakre spent three days in the hospital. She was discharged with facial drooping, speech difficulties, and mobility issues that required a walker. The group offers a space for survivors and their loved ones to discuss these challenges. Her husband, Keith, advised others to seek medical attention promptly if they notice similar symptoms.
The meetings also include recreational elements like game nights. Aakre used the recovery period to regain her ability to crochet. She now creates small crochet dogs to give as gifts to other attendees. The next meeting is scheduled for the final Thursday of the month at the same time.
