El Ponce at 939 Ponce de Leon Ave NE in Atlanta is marking its 10th anniversary with a 10-week series of fall events, culminating in a Dia de Muertos mariachi dinner on Nov. 1-2. Restaurant owner Rosa Thurner described the plans in an interview with ATL Live host Savannah Louie.
Dia de Muertos honors deceased loved ones through ofrendas arranged with photos, memorabilia, marigolds and candles. Thurner said El Ponce's own ofrenda has grown each year. As part of the anniversary programming, the restaurant will also install an ofrenda recognizing departed businesses along Ponce.
The fall calendar also includes Mexican craft nights, a pet costume contest, cooking classes, and a local gift market. Thurner shared Oaxacan-style tamales, chicken mole, and cocktails from the restaurant's menu during the conversation.
Dia de Muertos observances are scheduled for Nov. 1-2. Anniversary events run over 10 weeks in the fall at El Ponce, 939 Ponce de Leon Ave NE, Atlanta, GA.
