Crews began construction Tuesday on Segment 2A of the Atlanta Beltline’s Northwest Trail. The new 0.3-mile stretch runs from the southeast corner of Bobby Jones Golf Course east along Colonial Hills Circle to a Georgia Power substation. This segment links the completed Northside Trail with the Northwest Connector Trail, connecting the Collier Hills North and Colonial Homes neighborhoods.
The project is part of the city’s effort to complete its 22-mile mainline loop. This latest phase improves access to major employment and healthcare hubs in Buckhead, including Piedmont Atlanta Hospital and the Shepherd Center. A temporary connection will provide pedestrian traffic signals on Peachtree Road while adjacent sections are under construction.
Plans call for a 14-foot-wide multi-use path. The route will include an elevated trail structure, a pedestrian bridge, security cameras, lighting, and new landscaping planted with Trees Atlanta. Beltline officials stated that the corridor is designed to enhance walking and biking access for residents and workers in the area.
Construction on Segment 2A is expected to be complete by early 2028. The remainder of Segment 2 will proceed in stages. Section C, which runs from Peachtree Road to Peachtree Park Apartments, is scheduled to start in early 2027. Section 2B requires a new bridge over Peachtree Road by the Georgia Department of Transportation, but no specific timeline has been released for that portion.
When finished, the full Northwest Trail will span 4.3 miles from Blandtown to the Lindbergh and Morosgo neighborhoods. Beltline officials expect the entire 22-mile mainline loop to be completed by 2030. No itemized construction budget for Segment 2A has been released to the public.
The groundbreaking marks the next physical step in the multi-year project. The work will transform the corridor along Colonial Hills Circle into a dedicated path for pedestrians and cyclists. The new infrastructure aims to bridge gaps in the existing trail network while improving connectivity to local hospitals and office parks.
