Gainesville police arrested two suspects in the shooting of a 14-year-old boy earlier this week.
The victim sustained gunshot wounds to his right arm and right leg. The shooting occurred shortly before 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 27, near the intersection of Chestnut and Summit streets. The boy required medical treatment, though police did not release further details on his condition. Investigators determined the victim and one suspect knew each other and were involved in a prior dispute.
Police arrested Devaun Henry Peoples, 15, at a Gainesville hotel on Thursday, Oct. 29. He is being held at the Regional Youth Detention Center in Gainesville. Authorities charged him as an adult with aggravated assault and aggravated battery.
A second suspect, Tristan Anthony Mize, 20, was arrested on Friday, Oct. 30. He is currently held at the Hall County Jail. Mize faces charges of party to the crime of aggravated assault, false statements and writings, and hindering apprehension. Police have not released additional details regarding the specific roles each suspect played in the incident.
Gainesville Police Chief Jay Parrish said the incident is part of a troubling pattern of violence involving teenagers in the city. Parrish noted that three shootings involving teenagers have occurred in Gainesville since July 3. He stated that these incidents are tied to deeper criminal activity and that the use of firearms puts young lives at risk. Parrish urged parents and families to stay engaged with their children, know who they are spending time with, and help steer them away from criminal activity.
