Green Bay Packers edge rusher Micah Parsons is expected to return to active duty on Wednesday, November 25. That date marks the start of the team's regular-season game against the Los Angeles Rams. The move would signal his first appearance in nearly a year following a severe knee injury.
Parsons has not played since Week 15 of the previous season. He suffered a torn ACL and meniscus in a game against the Denver Broncos. The repair required an ACL reconstruction and a full meniscus repair. That procedure took place nearly 11 months ago. If the schedule holds, his return will occur roughly 12 months after the initial injury.
According to NFL Network, Parsons is slated to return to practice this week. Green Bay already secured a victory this week, beating the Carolina Panthers 27-19 to reach a 5-3 record. The plan involves Parsons participating in individual drills ahead of Week 9. He will then progress to team drills before Week 10. The Packers have a scheduled bye in Week 11, which provides a buffer before the Rams matchup.
Parsons joined the Packers via a trade from the Dallas Cowboys last year. He recorded 12.5 sacks in 14 games during that campaign. The team's defensive performance fluctuated dramatically with his presence. Green Bay ranked fifth in yards per play allowed through the first 15 weeks last season. After Parsons' injury in Week 16, the unit fell to 26th in that category. The team eventually lost to the Chicago Bears in the Wild Card Round.
Defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon has overseen a recent improvement in unit performance. Since Week 4 of the current season, Green Bay ranks third in yards per play allowed. The defense also has forced 13 turnovers, which is the highest total in the NFL. These statistics mark a sharp contrast to the struggles seen after Parsons' last injury.
The Packers currently sit last in the NFC North despite their 5-3 record. The division is described as highly competitive. SportsLine assigns a 61% probability to Green Bay making the postseason. Adding Parsons to the roster is viewed as a major tactical upgrade for the team's playoff chances.
