North Raleigh is home to a small kitchen where two distinct missions converge: baking all-natural dog treats and providing employment for adults with disabilities. The operation, known as Ella and Bella Pet Company, began in July of this year.

Kristine Flora founded the nonprofit for her daughter, Ella, who has Down syndrome. Flora started the organization shortly before Ella finished high school, citing a lack of clear career paths for graduates with disabilities. She noted that the unemployment rate for people with disabilities is twice the rate for those without, leaving many to stay at home or pay for expensive adult day programs.

Securing a location for the business proved difficult. Flora said she contacted several churches, but they all declined the request. The situation changed when she reached out to American Legion Raleigh Post 1. This post is the oldest American Legion location in North Carolina and one of the oldest in the United States. Post Commander Angel Menendez agreed to the partnership, saying, "I'm in."

Flora recalled the moment she learned his name, noting that her son asked for his name and she replied that his name was Angel. She said her son then asked if she needed further proof. Menendez stated the partnership aligns with the Legion's mission to support veterans, their families, and the community. He described the collaboration as ideal and perfect.

The company currently employs 19 team members, with a waitlist for new hires. Volunteers handle all aspects of the business, from baking and packaging to marketing. Team member Deanna Choplin contacts veterinarians and pet spas to place the products in their stores. Anthony Bonapart, an American Legion representative, said the post is committed to helping the community, especially children.

The handmade treats recently received the "Got to Be NC" designation, a recognition for products made in North Carolina. The team aims to get the treats into grocery stores. Choplin also hopes to have the products featured at the state fair's "Got to Be NC" location. Flora said the business is not about making money but about finding a purpose for team members so they can do something productive for society.

The company was named after Ella and her dog, Bella, who are best friends. Flora emphasized that the goal is to give people with disabilities a place to contribute and feel connected to their community.
