Historic Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta hosted more than 1,000 people on Sunday for a Day of the Dead celebration. The gathering marked the second day of the traditional Mexican holiday, which focuses on honoring deceased relatives rather than mourning their absence.

Participants filled the grounds to celebrate the lives of loved ones through music, food, and costumes. The cemetery's mausoleums were decorated with ofrendas, or traditional altars, displaying flowers, candles, and photographs of the dead. These displays served as focal points for family and community members to pay respects.

Mauricio Ramos attended the event to reconnect with those who have passed. He described the day as an opportunity to feel closer to them again. "It’s a day that we can celebrate and for us to get closer to them again," Ramos said.

Local groups contributed to the displays throughout the site. Los Niños Primero, a youth organization, erected an altar honoring its founder as well as friends, family members, and pets from the community. Lizbeth Zamora, the director of youth programs for the group, explained that the holiday provides a constructive way to process grief. "You get to a point where a loved one passes away and it’s like you want to celebrate them, you want to continue to remember them," Zamora said.

Eugenia Gonzalez noted that dressing up is a key part of her participation. She expressed pride in her annual makeup and costume, emphasizing the beauty of keeping the dead in the heart. "There’s beauty and the fact that you never lose someone really because they’re in our heart," Gonzalez said.

Stiletto, a drag performer who lost his mother during the pandemic, found comfort in the communal atmosphere. He attended church services on All Saints' Day before joining the celebration at the cemetery. "Today during church, it’s All Saints, and to hear my family’s name read aloud and then to come and see the celebration of life knowing that death is not the end, thank goodness," Stiletto said.

Newcomers to the tradition found the event welcoming. Grayson Owen, attending for the first time, appreciated the opportunity to see the community celebrate life. "I think it’s really amazing to see everyone come out and just celebrate the life and everything," Owen said. The holiday is traditionally observed on Nov. 1 and 2.
