President Donald Trump will campaign in Iowa and Kansas on Sunday, two days before the midterm elections, a reversal of his earlier decision to cancel the events. The president had scrapped the stops but chose this week to proceed with them, according to the Republican Party.
The schedule places Trump at the Five Flags Center in Dubuque, Iowa, at 3 p.m. ET, followed by a rally at the Salina, Kansas regional airport at 8 p.m. ET. Trump carried Iowa in three presidential races and Kansas in two.
Republicans need both Senate contests to keep control of the chamber. A Marist poll shows Republican Rep. Ashley Hinson three points behind Democrat Josh Turek in Iowa. In Kansas, Democrat Adam Hamilton leads incumbent Republican Roger Marshall by a narrow margin, the first time that lead has appeared. Iowa has not elected a Democrat to the Senate since 2008, while Kansas has not done so in nearly a century.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, dismissed the polling. "I've seen the voters on the ground. I'm telling you, the polls are wrong. They're inaccurate. They're underrepresenting Republicans," Johnson said.
A separate survey from Quinnipiac puts Trump's approval rating at around 34%. The rallies begin Sunday; voting concludes Tuesday.
