Three men linked to a fatal shooting at a Greek Orthodox church in Jordan were taken into custody on Monday. The arrests followed a dawn raid in the Karak governorate, located south of the capital, Amman. All three suspects sustained injuries during the operation, while no security personnel were hurt.
The initial attack occurred on Friday in the village of Hammoud. The incident happened while a funeral service was underway at the church. Reports indicated that three individuals participated in the shooting. Karak is home to a small Christian community, and no group has formally claimed responsibility for the violence.
Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya confirmed that the detained men were responsible for the incident. Speaking to the state broadcaster Al-Mamlaka, he stated that security services had captured those who carried out the act. He noted that the suspects resisted the forces and suffered severe injuries before being subdued.
Al-Faraya said the men were identified soon after the Friday incident. He added that officials used all available resources to locate and apprehend them. The Public Security Directorate stated that the suspects had met their just fate, a phrase reported by the Reuters news agency.
The directorate did not provide the names of the suspects or identify any links to Islamist militant groups. King Abdullah II directed authorities to respond firmly to the attackers. He described them as outlaws and warned against anyone seeking to undermine national unity.
