Phillip Williams pulls Brown couple from burning Stone Mountain apartment

DeKalb County fire officials confirmed that no injuries resulted from a Monday evening fire at Mountain Oaks Apartments in Stone Mountain. Units arrived at 4719 Central Dr. at 5:18 p.m. to find a three-story, 12-unit building fully engulfed in flames.

Phillip Williams stepped outside his home around 5 p.m. and noticed his neighbors had not evacuated. He saw their vehicle parked in the lot while other residents stood outside. Williams ran across the walkway bridge to the apartment on the right and pounded on the door. Ernest Brown was inside at the time. Williams told Brown that the fire was present. Brown initially replied with a simple acknowledgment. Williams insisted that the fire was immediate. He grabbed Brown and felt the heat from the back wall. Brown’s wife heard the fire throughout the ordeal. Williams noted that embers began catching on her shirt as he pulled her out. He ran with her to clear the building.

The Browns have experienced a fire at this complex twice within a few months. They described the current incident as a distinct loss. Brown expressed gratitude to Williams for the rescue. He stated that a delay of a few minutes would have changed the outcome. Brown called Williams an American hero. Williams accepted the description but said he did not consider himself a hero.
