A man in his early 20s is behind bars in Streetsboro, Ohio, following an arrest in the case of a high school student who died by suicide in 2022. The detention concludes a three-year investigation into sextortion that began when the 17-year-old, identified as James, died on Nov. 19, 2022.
Streetsboro police, the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, and Homeland Security Investigations confirmed the suspect is now in custody. The agencies worked together to track an IP address, a step that led directly to the identification and capture of the man.
James’ mother, Tamia, described the sequence of events that followed an initial contact on Instagram. In 2022, her son believed he was sharing photos with a 19-year-old girl. Within 24 hours of that encounter, Tamia said he received more than 200 text messages and dozens of phone calls. The callers, whom she believes were part of a group, told James they would ruin his life if he did not pay them thousands of dollars.
The suspect is scheduled to stand trial in the coming months. If convicted, he could face a prison sentence of more than 10 years. The case highlights the digital risks facing local students, though the immediate focus remains on the legal proceedings against the accused.
The arrest was announced by local law enforcement officials who emphasized the collaborative nature of the investigation. The involvement of federal and state task forces marked a multi-agency effort to solve the crime that had gone unsolved since James’ death.
