Social media users are asking if the United States will lose power for 90 days.
The rumor started after Pete Hegseth, the U.S. Defense Secretary, released a strategic plan on Sept. 30. The plan is called FORTRESS America. It is not an announcement of an attack. It is a preparation guide for the military.
Sean Evans, a political science professor at Union University in Jackson, Tenn., said people are misreading the document. "We know that more nations are engaging in cyber attacks," Evans said. The goal is to keep the military ready if an emergency happens. Evans noted that troops would have 90 days of energy supplies. They would also have backup ammunition.
The initiative has five main parts. These are energy independence, supply-chain resilience, a strategic defense reserve, installation hardening, and cyber resilience. The plan covers space and spectrum as well. Every military department and defense agency must be able to work alone for at least 90 days. They need access to water, electricity, fuel, and communications during that time.
The strategy is designed to help the U.S. military fight and win under any circumstances. This includes scenarios involving cyberattacks. The plan ensures the military can function without relying on outside networks or supplies for three months.
