Tomas Hertl scored with 32 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Vegas Golden Knights past the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 on Tuesday night. The tip-in goal, assisted by Mark Stone, gave Vegas its second win in Pittsburgh in franchise history. The winner arrived shortly after the Golden Knights killed a late five-on-three power play.
The Penguins had trailed by one goal for much of the contest. Tommy Novak and Rickard Rakell erased the deficit in the third period, briefly giving Pittsburgh the lead. Novak scored and added an assist during the rally. However, Novak was called for tripping shortly after the teams returned to even strength. That penalty set up Hertl's second power-play goal of the night, which was the second such goal allowed by Pittsburgh's penalty kill at home.
Adin Hill stopped 23 shots for the Golden Knights. The team found its rhythm late in the game after a shootout loss in Boston the previous night. Trevor Connelly had tied the score with a breakaway goal at 8:41 in the third period. That goal came after Novak and Rakell had taken the lead. Silovs stopped 20 shots for Pittsburgh, who have now lost seven of their last nine games.
Sidney Crosby did not record a point in the loss. The captain remains tied with Marcel Dionne for sixth place on the NHL's all-time scoring list with 1,771 points. Evgeni Malkin sat out the game with a lower-body injury. The teams played on more even terms in this rematch compared to a lopsided loss for Pittsburgh in Las Vegas just over two weeks ago.
Hertl's sixth goal of the season came late in the first period and was the only score in the first 40 minutes. Mitch Marner provided the primary assist, extending his points streak to 11 games. Rakell has now scored in four straight games. The Penguins' third straight loss leaves them searching for momentum on their home ice.
The Golden Knights continue their road trip Thursday with a game in Detroit. The Penguins welcome Boston to PPG Paints Arena on the same day.
